Martha Stewart Apologises Over Controversial Halloween Costume

Martha Stewart Apologises After Homelessness-Themed Halloween Costume Sparks Backlash

American television personality and businesswoman Martha Stewart has apologised after facing widespread criticism over her Halloween costume, which depicted a homeless person and was condemned by social media users as insensitive to people struggling with poverty and homelessness.

The 85-year-old lifestyle entrepreneur sparked the controversy after posting a photograph of herself on Instagram on Saturday, October 31, 2026. In the image, Stewart wore torn clothing, a black knitted cap and what appeared to be dirt smeared across her face. She also held a cardboard sign bearing the words, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME.”

The photograph appeared in an Instagram carousel that also contained promotional images of candles from her QVC collection. Stewart captioned the post, “My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!”

However, the costume quickly attracted criticism, with several social media users describing it as offensive and disconnected from the difficult realities faced by people experiencing homelessness.

Social Media Users Condemn Costume

Critics argued that homelessness is a serious social and economic challenge affecting millions of people and should not be turned into entertainment or used as a Halloween costume.

Some users also questioned the decision to feature the controversial outfit alongside promotional content for her candle collection, describing the combination as inappropriate.

Amid the growing backlash, Stewart deleted the photograph. However, screenshots of the post had already spread across social media, keeping the controversy in the spotlight.

Stewart Says She Intended to Highlight Homelessness

Responding to the criticism on Sunday, November 1, Stewart explained that her costume was intended to draw attention to homelessness, which she described as one of America’s most pressing ongoing challenges.

In a statement to PEOPLE, she said she was troubled that the outfit had offended people, stressing that she never intended to cause harm.

Stewart also maintained that homelessness was an issue she cared deeply about, adding that she had dedicated significant time and resources to supporting charitable organisations working to tackle the problem.

She further expressed her commitment to continuing efforts that could help improve the lives of people affected by homelessness.

Businesswoman Issues Direct Apology

Despite her initial explanation, criticism continued, prompting Stewart to release another statement on Instagram in which she admitted that her earlier response was inadequate.

Acknowledging her mistake, she wrote: “It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough.”

She also recognised the economic difficulties many people face and admitted that using homelessness as a costume was “insensitive and not funny.”

“I’m very sorry,” Stewart added.

Controversy Sparks Debate Over Halloween Costumes

The incident has reignited online discussions about the limits of Halloween costumes, particularly those depicting vulnerable communities or turning serious social problems into entertainment.

Stewart is well known for her lifestyle brand, television programmes, cookbooks and business ventures. She has also developed a reputation for elaborate Halloween celebrations and creative seasonal costumes.

However, her latest outfit has attracted a different kind of attention, with the businesswoman ultimately acknowledging that her attempt to raise awareness about homelessness was poorly judged.
